Designer Duds Don't Need To Cost a Lot of Dough
You like clothes and you like to look good, but you don't want to break the bank.
San Francisco has scores of upscale used clothing and designer consignment stores, several on Sacramento Street, where you can snatch up top-of-the-line pieces from the likes of Prada and Gucci for a fraction of their full retail value.
Sure, there are vintage and used clothing stores on Haight Street and along Valencia Street in the Mission. Some of these have great finds; others seem flea-ridden and make you want to shower after rifling through the racks, nevermind trying on the clothes.
This hub, however, is a guide to the best, high quality consignment shops where you can build an A-List wardrobe on a college student's budget.
Best in Class Women's Consignment Shops
CRIS: This Russian HIll consignment store is a reliable go-to for designer and stylish clothes in good shape. The owners here are picky, as demonstrated by their always well-merchandised window displays. Cris does not look like a used clothing store! And the racks are all arranged by color, so it's easier to put together an outfit at Cris than it is at most stores. 2056 Post St.
GOODBYES: Presidio Heights and Sacramento Street have some of the most chi-chi boutiques in town — the kinds of place where a t-shirt can easily cost over $100. Based on the neighborhood, then, it's small wonder that Sacramento Street is also home to some pretty swell consignment stores. GoodByes is among the best, and the merchandise here sure puts the 'gently' in gently worn. GoodByes has a women's store and a men's store on the same block. 3483 Sacramento Street and 3464 Sacramento Street.
DESIGNER CONSIGNER: See the listing above for GoodByes to get a sense for the quality of this neighborhood. The Designer Consigner is also an institution on this street. Good brands; good finds. Designer Consigner also has a downtown location near the tony Union Square shopping district. 3525 Sacramento Street and 563 Sutter Street.
VER UNICA: Nestled among the stylish boutiques of Hayes Valley — San Francisco's answer to Manhattan's Nolita or Lower East Side — lies Ver Unica. Here you can find those special, trendy pieces that make your outfit. 437 Hayes Street.
GLAMOUR CLOSET: This is North Beach's answer to couture on a budget. This small, charming boutique is tucked between North Beach and the Financial District, and it's easy to pop in here during a lunch break. 114 Columbus Street.
CROSSROADS TRADING: Jeans, gowns, accessories. Bohemian or yuppie or classic. Crossroads TRading offers a vast array of styles and price points at its various San Francisco stores. 2123 Market Street and 1901 Fillmore Street.
ISSO: Noe Valley's entrant into the neighborhood consignment store wars. 3789 24th Street.
